This week the United States Supreme Court is expected to hand down its ruling on President Obama’s healthcare act. If the bill is overturned, many Americans will joyfully cheer its defeat, despite it being the first serious effort to correct a system that allows Americans to rank #37 in healthcare and #38 in life expectancy, but #1 in per capita healthcare expenditure. The only other healthcare category in which America leads is the zeal with which we insist we have the world’s best healthcare.

When the Soviets put a satellite in space, it inspired Americans to send a man to the moon as part of a competition to prove America’s system and values could produce greater achievements than the Soviets. Nowadays when Americans hear Cubans beat them in life expectancy it doesn’t inspire more than a shrug–we’ll offer another shrug in a few minutes, just give us some time…

  1. As a Canadian with family and friendship ties to the U.S. I’ve always felt it was disgraceful that the most powerful nation on the earth does such a poor job of taking care of its citizens.

As a Canadian who paid a whopping $1 [not typo, and the dollar was for a phone in the room and not the surgery], for a for two-night stay in a semi-private room in a major hospital for a parotidectomy, I think it is about time Americans can avail theselves to the best medical care on the planet and make treatment decisions based on medical outcome rather than having to figure the concept of bankruptcy into the equation.

    1. You are so right! Even with insurance many people face bankruptcy due to high medical costs. I do not understand why folks are so adverse to a plan where all citizens can receive adequate health coverage. Beats me. But the debate here in the US is far from over.
